There is a cure, which is to eat very sparingly for the rest of one's life. Obese people seem to be able to live on very little. They appears to have a very conservative metabolism. They can of course manage to eat sparingly for a while (and if they have most of their stomach removed that have no option) but they will usually regain any weight lost.

There will be no cure for obesity until everyone recognises the true cause. Obesity is multi-factorial: Obese people are people with "thrifty genes," who are (or become) insulin resistant and who are addicted to the very foods that will make them gain weight. The diet that cures obesity is anathema to a food addict because it means abstaining from the foods that are a food addicts favourite "food fix."

I would say the root cause of obesity is addiction to food and the cause of food addiction is emotional distress. We are just not looking deep enough.

You are WOEFULLY misinformed on just about every count here. 50 to 80 percent of eating disorders have a genetic origin. Biology plays a huge role in who develops anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating. People with eating disorders do have an "addiction" to food; they are the victims of screwed-up brain chemistry, just as someone with schizophrenia is. A person with anorexia is ill in the same way as someone with pneumonia.

People do not "decide" to be anorexic or obese. They do not choose an eating disorder. They suffer from it. And if you've ever known anyone with an e.d., you would know that it's truly a trip to hell.

I'd love to see your sources for saying the completely untrue things above. If you don't know your facts, it's best to not say anything at all. It's sites like this that perpetuate the stigma around eating disorders that is one of the bars to true recovery.
